The Frequency Central Wonderland Review

In the expansive world of Eurorack modular synthesis, versatility and control are paramount. The Frequency Central Wonderland, a compact 8×8 patchbay/matrix mixer/switcher, embodies these qualities with a design that caters to both audio and control voltage signals. Let's delve into how the Frequency Central Wonderland performs in practical use and explore its strengths and quirks.

The Wonderland Module

Design and Functionality

The Wonderland boasts a straightforward yet powerful design. Its 64 push-on/push-off switches allow for flexible routing of up to 8 inputs to 16 outputs, offering extensive patching possibilities. Each of the 8 inputs features a micro-attenuator, enabling precise signal level adjustments without the need for additional external gear.

One notable feature of the Wonderland is its dual output system: 8 normal outputs (in phase) and 8 inverted outputs (180 degrees out of phase). This configuration facilitates complex signal manipulation, ideal for generating unique audio textures or intricate modulation patterns.

Practical Use and Performance

In practice, the Wonderland shines particularly in applications involving trigger signal management. For instance, users like myself leverage a technique to separate pitch and trigger signals, and Wonderland facilitates real-time rhythm creation and dynamic signal routing within a modular setup.

However, it's worth noting that the module exhibits some signal bleed issues, especially when all switches are off. This leakage can occasionally result in unintended triggers, affecting performance sequences. While the micro-attenuators offer a solution to manage signal levels, fine-tuning them to balance between preventing bleed and ensuring consistent triggering across various modules can be a nuanced process. And perfection won't be attainable in this scenario; to ensure all modules receiving triggers from the Wonderland operate effectively, you must accept a degree of trigger bleed and adapt accordingly. Consider this phenomenon akin to "natural probability." Understanding the intricacies of your system will enable you to mitigate this drawback to the extent that it becomes imperceptible.

Versatility Beyond Trigger Signals

Beyond trigger signal management, the Wonderland excels in routing and mixing both audio and CV signals. Its ability to merge and manipulate modulation sources opens avenues for creative exploration. Musicians can leverage the Wonderland's features to experiment with techniques like parallel processing using reverb and delays, creating intricate feedback loops, or blending multiple CV modulation sources for complex control of parameters.

The combination of normal and inverted outputs adds depth to modulation schemes, allowing for compelling sonic narratives and dynamic control. This versatility empowers users to craft rich, evolving soundscapes and unlock new dimensions of musical expression within their modular setups.

Ergonomics and Considerations

One aspect that might require adaptation is the use of micro-attenuators, adjusted using a small screwdriver. While initially cumbersome, these adjustments are typically a one-time setup, minimizing the need for frequent recalibration once optimal settings are achieved.

Furthermore, it's important to note that the Wonderland's compact design, while advantageous for portability, can also present challenges in terms of usability. The densely packed layout of switches on the module can make it difficult to precisely press a switch and discern which switch is turned on or off at a glance, especially in dimly lit performance environments. This issue can be mitigated with familiarization over time, using additional lighting solutions to enhance visibility during operation, or by passing your fingers across the switches as if reading Braille to feel for their positions.

Another consideration for improvement is the layout of the outputs. I personally believe it would have been more convenient if all the outputs were grouped together at either the top or bottom of the module. For instance, having all outputs at the top would align with my preference of placing control modules at the bottom of my performance case, keeping them free of cables and easily accessible. Regrouping the outputs in this manner would enhance cable management and streamline the signal flow organization for users with similar performance setups.

Despite these ergonomic considerations, the Wonderland remains a powerful and versatile tool that opens up endless creative possibilities in modular synthesis.

Performance and Portability

The Wonderland's compact form factor (18HP) and affordability make it an attractive choice for performers seeking a portable yet powerful solution. With its array of switches and outputs, the module serves as a versatile control hub, facilitating expressive live performances and evolving sonic journeys.

In comparison to alternatives like the Hinton Instruments SwitchMix II, favoured by Steevio for its precision additive mixing capabilities despite its higher price and larger size, the Wonderland presents a compelling option. With its smaller size and lower cost, the Wonderland delivers impressive functionality and performance, making it an accessible and practical choice for modular synthesizer enthusiasts.

In Sum

In summary, the Frequency Central Wonderland offers a compelling balance of functionality and affordability in the Eurorack modular synthesis realm. Its patching capabilities cater to a range of applications, from trigger signal manipulation to complex modulation routing. While some nuances like signal bleed and fine-tuning may require attention, the Wonderland ultimately stands out as a versatile tool for shaping sonic landscapes and enabling expressive control within a modular setup.

For performers seeking a compact, feature-rich module to enhance their modular synthesizer's capabilities, the Wonderland proves to be a worthy addition, providing ample control and creative potential in a modest footprint.
