The Infinite Machinery 2131 VCO Review

Updated: Apr 9

The Infinite Machinery 2131 VCO

The quest for exceptional oscillators is perpetual. Enter the Infinite Machinery 2131 VCO*, a compact yet powerful module engineered to redefine sonic boundaries. With unparalleled pitch tracking, sturdy construction, and a versatile feature set, this VCO sets a new standard for excellence in the modular realm.

Exploring the Features

The standout feature of the 2131 VCO is its impeccable pitch tracking, surpassing industry benchmarks and rivaling even esteemed counterparts like the Intellijel Dixie 2+ or the NANO Modules ONA. Despite its modest size, this VCO delivers robust performance and reliability, making it a cornerstone for enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Another important quality of the Infinite Machinery 2131 VCO is its effortless tuning process. Unlike some oscillators that can be overly sensitive and challenging to tune, the 2131 VCO strikes the perfect balance. Tuning this module is a breeze, with precise adjustments achievable without the frustration of overly sensitive controls. In fact, I found it to be the easiest tuning experience among all the oscillators I've encountered. This user-friendly tuning interface ensures smooth operation and minimizes setup time, allowing you to focus on unleashing your creativity without technical distractions.

Equipped with intuitive manual controls, the 2131 VCO empowers users to sculpt their sonic landscapes with precision. Fine-tune frequencies with coarse and fine tuning knobs, shape pulse waveforms with PWM control, and seamlessly synchronize with external sources using hard/soft sync functionality.

It's important to note that when modulating the PWM, users should exercise caution as the design may yield glitchy sounds. An offset may be necessary to ensure a smooth modulation experience, particularly if you prefer to avoid unexpected sonic artifacts. However, if you're into glitchy sounds, this PWM feature is built for you.

This module also features a plethora of inputs, including two 1V/oct inputs (good for transposing), PWM CV input, sync frequency input, and linear frequency modulation input, the 2131 VCO seamlessly integrates into any modular setup.

A Comparative Analysis

In my pursuit of sonic perfection, I've had the pleasure of testing the Infinite Machinery 2131 VCO alongside a variety of other oscillators in my collection, including the Dixie 2+, Make Noise XPO, Make Noise 0-Coast, and Bocuma Synths SUM0. Through meticulous comparison, I've scrutinized each module's tonal characteristics to discern their classic waveform sonic signatures.

While the differences in tonal quality are subjective and subtle, I found myself gravitating towards the classic waveforms' tones produced by the 2131 VCO. There's a certain warmth and richness to its sound that resonates with my musical sensibilities. However, it's important to note that tonal preferences are highly personal, and what appeals to one may not necessarily appeal to another. In the grand scheme of things, the nuances in tonal quality are minor to me, and all the oscillators mentioned produce exceptional soundscapes.

Ultimately, whether you prefer the charm of the 2131 VCO or the flair of other oscillators, one thing remains clear – each module offers its own sonic palette, ripe for exploration and artistic expression. It's not about finding the "best" sound, but rather discovering the sounds and features that resonate with you on a deeper level, igniting your passion for sonic exploration and creative discovery.

Having thoroughly tested the Infinite Machinery 2131 VCO*, I am pleased to provide my honest endorsement. This module exceeded my expectations with its exceptional performance and reliability. One notable pairing that stood out during my exploration was with the caractériel SetonixSynth Marsupial filter. The harmonious blend of the triangle and square waves, when combined into this filter, produces an exceptional auditory experience, particularly when a subtle fast LFO is introduced into the FM input, enhancing its vibrancy.

Stay tuned for an upcoming video review and demo on our YouTube channel, where we delve deeper into the capabilities of the Infinite Machinery 2131 VCO, EG-2 and the new Hexa VCA.
