XODES Eurorack modules bring a refreshing approach to Eurorack, combining high functionality with usually minimal HP footprint—ideal for those who want versatility without sacrificing precious case space.

Xodes Modules

Known for thoughtfully designed utility modules, XODES focuses on integrating innovative control and connectivity options. Each module, from sequential switches to programmable logic blocks, reflects a practical understanding of modular synth users' needs, offering intuitive solutions for complex setups.

Whether you’re looking to streamline I/O with the nIO, enhance control with touch-based interaction on the TP8, or experiment with creative voltage routing on the PV44, XODES provides modules that encourage flexibility and experimentation. This overview will explore each module’s unique features, showing how XODES enhances modular synth capabilities for new and seasoned users alike.

nIO

The XODES nIO module, also known as the Nano Versatile Dual I/O, is a clever, compact 1U interface designed to offer maximum connectivity in a minimal 2HP space. It was created as an alternative to the µMIO, specifically for users who don’t require USB or MIDI ports when linking with certain modules, like the Expert Sleepers Disting. With its straightforward, no-solder connection via jumper cables, nIO keeps setup simple while allowing easy integration with diverse systems.

Each of the two connectors on the module accommodates mono signals, stereo, or MIDI TRS. If labeling isn’t quite to your taste, the faceplate can be flipped for a clean, unlabeled look. Connections are marked by tip (T), ring (R), sleeve (S), and normalization (N) to suit modular and MIDI needs, offering options for converting between MIDI TRS types. This flexible, user-centered design makes the nIO a powerful yet minimalist addition to any setup.

SS14

The XODES SS14 is a compact yet versatile 1U (or 3U/3HP) sequential switch module with unique functionality for both looped and randomized sequences. It provides up to four steps, automatically adjusting sequence length based on the highest input/output jack in use, creating a highly adaptable module for creative signal routing. In loop mode, the SS14 functions as a traditional sequential switch, stepping through each I/O in sync with a clock input. In random mode, the module selects outputs randomly, adding unexpected variations with each clock pulse.

Additional features include an asynchronous reset that forces selection back to the first I/O, and a normalization option for chaining multiple steps, ideal for consistent clocking. The SS14’s thoughtful layout and compact design make it a powerful tool for rhythmic or melodic modulation, bringing both predictability and surprise to any modular performance or sequencing setup.

PV44 + IMI Expander

The XODES PV44 + IMI is a powerful 4 x 4 preset voltage generator, perfect for routing complex modulations or triggering percussion synthesizers. With four rows of configurable voltages and prioritized trigger inputs, PV44 allows instant selection between four preset voltage groups, which can be set to ranges of 1V, 2V, 4V, +5V, or ±5V. An attenuverter on each row enables fine control, while a common modulation input brings added versatility. The IMI expansion adds even more modulation possibilities by introducing an additional input group and selectable routing options.

For a deeper look, you can check out a previous review and demo video where I explored this module's creative potential in action. This module’s flexibility and range of control make it an ideal choice for precision modulation and dynamic voltage setups in any Eurorack system.

MLB

The XODES MLB (3U), or Malleable Logic Block, is a compact 3HP (or 1U/12HP) module packed with versatile logic capabilities, making it an essential utility in most Eurorack systems. Designed to replace the larger LB5, the MLB offers the same robust functions in a smaller footprint. The MLB can function as a dual inverter, as well as provide 2-input AND, OR, and XOR gates with complementary outputs. It also includes a D-type flip-flop mode, which is the only setting that utilizes the Reset input.

The module’s operation mode is controlled by a central potentiometer, which doubles as an attenuator when a signal is patched into its CV input. This intuitive control layout makes it easy to shift between functions on the fly, allowing for fast reconfiguration in live or experimental environments. The MLB’s diverse logic outputs and adjustable control make it a versatile addition to creative signal processing, adding interactivity and depth to modular patches.

TP8

The XODES TP8 is an innovative touch-based module designed to bring tactile interaction to modular synthesis. With eight touch-sensitive I/O pads, the TP8 allows users to route, mix, crossfade, and attenuate signals simply by touching the surface, making it ideal for live performance and interactive patching. The hands-on nature of the module enables control over triggers, gates, and modulation sources—perfect for those looking to break away from traditional knob or slider manipulation. This module shines in applications like routing modulation, gating audio signals, or layering VCO waveforms, providing users with a creative way to inject real-time expressivity into their setups with just a fingertip.

Practical Impressions of XODES Modules

The XODES lineup offers a thoughtful balance of functionality and compactness, fitting seamlessly into various setups. Here’s my personal take on these modules.

nIO

This is a little powerhouse. Converting MIDI signals, between TRS A and B, can be a hassle that often requires clunky adapters. The nIO keeps it simple, allowing these conversions within a super-compact format. It’s practical, tidy, and solves a common issue without adding bulk to the case.

SS14

As a sequential switch, the SS14 is an essential component of my performance setup. I utilize it to send a single trigger to multiple destinations in sequence, which is a game-changer for decluttering my compositions. This approach not only allows each element to stand out more clearly to listeners but also streamlines the mixing process by reducing the number of competing sounds. The ability to toggle between linear and random sequencing adds an extra layer of excitement, introducing unpredictability at the flick of a switch.

PV44 + IMI

This module keeps me thinking creatively. It’s flexible enough to act like a sequencer, but it’s really more of a patch-programming tool, ideal for splitting voices like those on Plaits or BIA. While it hasn’t found a place in my performance case just yet, it’s only because I lack the ideal pairings to maximize its potential. It has so much to offer with the right setup.

MLB

The MLB has a permanent place in my system due to its versatile logic functions. Almost every patch needs logic, though the requirements vary, and being able to switch the logic type mid-jam adds a layer of surprise for both the audience and myself.

TP8

The TP8 is a fun and playable module, though touchpads can be finicky. If your skin’s conductivity is an issue, you may need to use patch cables instead (not very playable in my case) for reliable performance. When it works, it’s fantastic for impacting signals in a tactile, expressive way.

XODES Eurorack Modules In Sum

XODES modules bring a unique blend of practical functionality and creative potential, especially for users seeking versatile, space-efficient solutions. Each module, from the tiny yet essential nIO to the flexible and complex PV44 + IMI, offers a distinct advantage in modular setups, whether in live performance or intricate patching. The SS14 stands out as a core component in rhythm-based systems, while the MLB adds an element of surprise through its changeable logic functions. Though the TP8’s touch sensitivity may not suit everyone, it’s an innovative module for hands-on control. Altogether, XODES provides solutions that streamline modular systems without compromising on flexibility, giving users the power to shape their sound with precision and ease.
