Flame's FM Kosmos

Writer: Arch DelaroArch Delaro

Flame’s FM Kosmos reimagines FM synthesis by consolidating essential functions—six operators, 32 algorithms, built-in envelopes, filters, VCAs, and multi-effects—into one compact Eurorack module. This all-in-one design minimizes patch complexity and eliminates the need for multiple separate units, making it both efficient and cost-effective.

The intuitive interface, featuring dedicated modes and eight responsive potentiometers, ensures smooth control during both studio work and live performance. With support for polyphonic and monophonic modes, as well as built-in monophonic chord configurations with 44 chords, FM Kosmos caters to a range of creative possibilities. Whether in the studio or on stage, it provides a versatile and streamlined platform for crafting dynamic and intricate FM patches without the hassle of traditional setups.

Flame's FM Kosmos: Full Voice Module Design

The FM Kosmos excels as a full voice module by combining critical synthesis functions into one streamlined unit. Traditionally, building an FM patch requires numerous discrete modules for oscillation, envelope generation, filtering, VCA control, and effects. Flame's FM Kosmos simplifies this setup by integrating all these components, reducing the need for a complex patch bay and significantly cutting costs.

Its core features—six operators and 32 FM algorithms—offer vast sonic potential while keeping the interface clean and functional. The eight potentiometers intelligently adapt to the active mode, automatically mapping to relevant parameters for instant adjustments and streamlined setup. This consolidation not only enhances the workflow but also promotes creativity by removing unnecessary technical hurdles, whether in the studio or during a live set.

The Big Screen

The FM Kosmos screen conceals a hidden powerhouse: Display Algorithm Graphic. With a simple press-and-hold on the encode knob, the display transforms into an insightful blueprint of your chosen algorithm. It visually distinguishes each FM operator’s role—whether acting as a carrier, modulator, or even self-modulated— and how they're interconnected, empowering you to adjust each element with precision. This intuitive, real-time visualization demystifies complex FM synthesis, turning intricate sound design into a more accessible and engaging process. Ultimately, this feature is pivotal for crafting expressive and dynamic FM patches, offering both clarity and creative freedom to shape your sonic landscape.

Creative Features

The FM Kosmos offers an innovative suite of creative features that empower musicians to shape sounds with unparalleled versatility. The standout Morph function allows seamless transitions between two voice variations, called sound A and sound B, enabling rich, dynamic soundscapes. Custom patches are easy to design and refine, reflecting the user's unique sonic vision. With 128 presets organized into eight intuitive banks (Lead, Bass, Keys, Percussive, Pads, Drone, Moving, and FX+Noise), and 128 user memory locations, navigating complex FM synthesis becomes effortless. This combination of customizability and ready-to-play options provides a balanced creative workflow, ensuring both detailed sound sculpting and spontaneous live performance flexibility, making FM Kosmos a truly inspiring tool for any synthesist.
