The Expert Sleepers ES-10 is a powerful and versatile addition to the Eurorack ecosystem, offering an 8-in/8-out ADAT interface that excels in both audio and control voltage (CV) applications. Whether you're integrating your modular system with a digital audio workstation (DAW) or VCV Rack, or expanding your setup with additional inputs and outputs, the ES-10 stands as a great tool.

In this article, we’ll delve into the specifications, features, and practical applications of the ES-10, and explore why it’s a standout choice for modular enthusiasts.

Expert Sleepers ES-10

Overview and Key Features

The ES-10 is equipped with AKM's renowned Velvet Sound AD/DA converters, ensuring high-fidelity audio quality whether you're handling audio or control voltage (CV) signals. The module’s DC-coupled inputs and outputs allow for seamless transmission of CV to and from your computer, making it ideal for complex setups where precision and flexibility are crucial.

Here’s a different look at the ES-10’s standout features:

  • Flexible Settings: Jumpers on the back of the module allow you to select between line level or modular level for each input, offering greater flexibility depending on your setup. If pristine audio is your priority, you can use a jumper on the back of the module to remove the DC coupling from the inputs, allowing only AC signals (audio only) to pass through.

  • Expandable with ES-5: The ES-10 can be expanded with the ES-5 module, allowing for even more outputs and enhanced control over your system.

  • Requires ADAT Input and Output: You can easily use the ADAT output port of your ES-8 with the ES-10. You don't have an ES-8? Here are some compatible audio interfaces: Arturia AudioFuse X8, Focusrite Clarett+ 8Pre, Behringer U-Phoria UMC1820, Neve 88M, MOTU LP32, Audient iD14 MKII, Focusrite6 Scarlett 18i8, and Presonus Studio 1810C.

My Take on the ES-10

Cost Efficiency Compared to ES-8 and ES-9

The ES-10 offers a more affordable alternative to the ES-8 and ES-9 without sacrificing the amount of inputs and outputs while still delivering high-quality performance. If you have an ADAT-equipped audio interface, the ES-10 is a smart choice that offers significant savings.

Alternative to ES-8

The ES-10 offers four additional outputs compared to the ES-8, providing greater versatility for users who need more signals from a DAW or VCV Rack, all without the extra expense.

Alternative to ES-9

For live performances, the ES-10 offers key advantages over the ES-9. Unlike the ES-9, which has a sensitive USB-C socket prone to accidental disconnections causing disastrous music disruption, the ES-10 eliminates this risk by not relying on USB-C. Additionally, paired with the ES-5, the ES-10 provides more outputs than the ES-9 at a lower cost. If you don’t need the ES-9’s main outputs, SPDIF ports, or headphone jack, the ES-10 with the ES-5 is a more reliable and cost-effective choice.

The Only Downside

The ES-10 cannot be used without an ADAT input connection from the ADAT output port of your audio interface. It’s something to consider when planning your setup. If you don’t have an audio interface with ADAT ports or don't plan on buying one, the ES-8 or ES-9 are better alternatives.

In Sum

The Expert Sleepers ES-10 is an outstanding tool for expanding your Eurorack system’s capabilities. While the ES-8 or ES-9 might be preferable if you lack ADAT ports on your audio interface, the ES-10 is likely to be a better alternative if your interface supports ADAT. It’s also an excellent choice for expanding your inputs and outputs if you already have an ES-8.

Featuring premium components, flexible input and output options, and seamless integration with hybrid setups, the ES-10 provides a cost-effective and reliable solution for modular enthusiasts. Although it requires ADAT ports to operate, the benefits of its high-quality sound, versatile connectivity, cost efficiency, and expandability make it a great module for serious hybrid users. Whether in the studio or performing live, the ES-10 ensures your modular system always performs at its best.
